Dartmouth College announced on April 1 a new lineup of speakers for its spring term Law and Democracy: The United States at 250 series, featuring journalist Ezra Klein, historian Annette Gordon-Reed, and Ford Foundation President Heather Gerken among others.
The series aims to provide students and the community with opportunities to engage in discussions about policy, law, and governance as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. According to Dartmouth, these events are designed to present a range of perspectives on key issues facing American democracy.
Ezra Klein, a columnist for The New York Times and host of The Ezra Klein Show podcast, will appear alongside Heather Gerken—president of the Ford Foundation and Sterling Professor Emeritus at Yale Law School—on April 16. Their discussion will cover topics such as the state of U.S. democracy and what Klein refers to as the “Abundance Agenda.” Russell Muirhead will moderate their conversation.
Annette Gordon-Reed ’81, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian who serves as Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University, is scheduled to speak on May 14 about historical narratives in America. Other notable guests include former White House counsel Bob Bauer and former Office of Legal Counsel head Jack Goldsmith who will discuss executive power on May 20.
“The Law and Democracy series explores our system of government, its fundamental values, and its core tensions. The spring lineup promises to continue offering the Dartmouth community a broad range of expertise and viewpoints as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” said Herschel Nachlis, senior associate director at Dartmouth’s Rockefeller Center.
Additional speakers this spring include Beth Jantz ’99 (April 2), Bob Bixby (April 7), Dahlia Lithwick (April 27), Frances Lee (April 28), Silvia Foster-Frau (May 5), Jeffrey Rosen (May 7), Maggie Blackhawk (May 8), Laurie Santos (May 12), Daniel Gilbert (May 28) among others. Information about registration and video streams is available through Dartmouth’s communications channels.
