The Enfield Fire Chief is warning everyone that the ice on the Town’s lakes, ponds, rivers, brooks, wetlands and other water bodies is extremely thin. A lack of cold weather and significant recent rainfall have combined to present an extremely hazardous ice situation for this time of year. Chief Neily warns everyone to respect the fact that there is still open water on several major water bodies, including Lake Mascoma. This general gauge gives safe ice thicknesses to support different types of activities: Less than 4 inches: Stay off the ice. 4 inches: Walking, ice fishing, ice skating, or other activities on foot are permitted. 5 to 7 inches: Snowmobiling or riding ATVs are safe.
