Glenwood Cemetery Headstone Cleaning

0Comments

On September 16, 2022, a volunteer effort, coordinated with Granite United Way’s “Day of Caring”, cleaned and beautified historic headstones at the Glenwood Cemetery. By the end of the morning, approximately 50 headstones were restored to their former appearance using a biodegradable and eco-friendly product approved for historic conservation work.

A special mention to Cory Grant from the Lebanon Outing Club for opening his doors to the volunteers, to Lebanon’s Cemetery Sexton Patrick McCarthy for coordinating the event in collaboration with Katie Berndsen from Granite United Way, and to Mimi Hains from the Lebanon Historical Society for holding the workshop and photographing the effort.

Most importantly, this day was made possible thanks to the volunteers themselves: Morgan Hamilton, Jonathan Hurst, Jennifer Jones, Ashleigh McFarlin, Alison Pearsons, Larissa Pyer, Jamie Richardson, Anya Riemer, Kristie, and Klyson Saulnier, Stephanie Turner, Elizabeth Wilson, Randall Woodward, as well as cemetery staff Brendan Downey and Doug Boisvert.

The Cemetery Department is planning to host a second day of volunteering this fall to continue its efforts to clean headstones throughout its cemeteries.  A date for the day has not yet been determined.
