On January 11, 2026, the Lebanon Police Department responded to a report of a hawk that had collided with a vehicle’s windshield on Interstate 89 northbound near Exit 20. The person who reported the incident was uncertain about the hawk’s condition but contacted authorities for assistance.

Officer Samuel McClory arrived at the scene and found a red-tailed hawk with a broken leg. He secured the bird and transported it to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) for medical care and rehabilitation.

After receiving treatment, the hawk was released back into the wild on February 3, 2026. Officer McClory participated in the release.

“The Lebanon Police Department appreciates the community member who took the time to report the incident and recognizes the collaborative efforts of VINS in providing expert wildlife care,” stated Deputy Chief Alan J. Lowe.
