The Mascoma River Local Advisory Committee (LAC) is seeking new members to help guide the management and protection of the Mascoma River, which runs from Canaan Center to West Lebanon. The river is recognized by New Hampshire as a protected waterway due to its natural and cultural significance.

The LAC works with communities along the river, including Canaan, Enfield, and Lebanon. Members participate in reviewing permit and funding applications related to the river and assist in setting local priorities for managing its corridor. They also coordinate planning efforts between towns, understanding that activities upstream can impact downstream conditions.

Support for these committees comes from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), which provides permit notifications, technical assistance, resources, and maintains a calendar for committee activities.

To strengthen representation from Lebanon on the committee, two residents are being sought for three-year terms. Interested individuals may have backgrounds in areas such as local government, business, conservation, recreation, agriculture, or be riverfront landowners.

Those wishing to apply should fill out the “Local River Management Advisory Committee Nominee Form” through the NH Online Forms System (NHDES-W-07-030). After submission, nominations are reviewed by the Lebanon City Council before being forwarded to NHDES Rivers Program.

For questions about serving on the committee or about the application process, contact Acting Chair Sarah Riley or NHDES Watershed Planning Assistant Sydney Gendreau at 603-271-1522.

Further details can be found on both the NHDES webpage and the City of Lebanon’s Mascoma River Local Advisory Committee page.

“The Mascoma River was designated by the State as a protected river under the New Hampshire Rivers Management and Protection Program, reflecting the river’s natural and cultural value from Canaan Center to West Lebanon.”
