City of Lebanon issued the following announcement on March 29.
Every spring, salamanders, frogs, and toads migrate to vernal breeding pools on “Big Nights” — evenings when temperatures are around 40 degrees or higher and it’s raining or roads are wet. There will likely be several migrations throughout the spring - between mid-March and early May in our region – some amphibians have already started migrating in our region - so stay tuned to the weather!
How can you help?
One way is to avoid driving on Big Nights. If you have to drive on rainy spring evenings, try to avoid likely or known amphibian crossing hot spots, drive slowly, and be on the lookout for Big Night volunteers and amphibians, particularly near wetlands. Not sure if you are near one? Open your window, turn off your radio, and perhaps you will hear the frog calls.
Another way is to volunteer. Get outside and observe or help amphibians cross the roads. For more information about how you can help Lebanon’s amphibians, check out the Lebanon Conservation Commission’s Amphibian Crossing Page and use their form to report your findings. Watch the Harris Center Amphibian Crossing Training Videos and check out their page for lots of information about Big Nights. These FAQs are very helpful. These FAQs are very helpful.
If you have friends or family in VT, Hartford has a Salamander Crossing Team. Elsewhere in VT, check out the North Branch Nature Center’s Amphibian Crossing Program. They have some great educational and training videos available.
