Do you know where your recyclables go? In this day and age, understanding where your food comes from is important. Is it local? Is it organic? Is it grass-fed, cage-free, etc? But do you know where your recyclables go and why it makes a difference?
At the Lebanon Recycling Center, staff works hard to manage recyclables to meet market specifications, but also to meet more stringent domestic/local market guidelines. Utilizing more regional recycling markets has broad impacts.
By focusing on available recycling markets that are closer to home, we are working to keep money in the local community. The plastic recycling at the Lebanon Recycling Center is reprocessed into outdoor furniture and ultimately sold at shops throughout the Northeast; including in Sunapee, NH. Mixed paper and cardboard are recycled into new products in Maine and New Hampshire. Scrap metal is recycled in western Massachusetts and electronic devices are demanufactured in Portsmouth, NH.
Keeping recycling within our region also reduces our transportation footprint. This has a positive impact on the environment by reducing the amount of diesel fuel needed to move this commodity.
