Gamelan Workshop

4

Come and try your hand at playing Indonesian gamelan! Sleeping Fox, an ensemble of instruments including gongs, metallophones and drums, traveled from Bali to the Upper Valley in 2003 and is now resident in Boston. These beautiful instruments will be making a return visit to Lebanon on July 9 for a workshop led by Emeric Viani, director of the Cambridge Youth Gamelan.

Gamelan playing is accessible to players with all levels of experience, including none at all. We will offer two levels of workshops:

1 pm – Intermediate/advanced workshop. Ages 12 and up. This workshop is for musicians with some previous gamelan experience.

2:30 pm – Beginner workshop. Open to ages 7 and up. No experience necessary!

Observers also welcome, and beginner participants are welcome to come early to listen to the first workshop.

Accessibility Note: The instruments can be quite loud, so if you have sensitivity to sound or loud noises, we recommend coming prepared with earplugs or headphones.

Emeric Viani is a music educator in the greater Boston area with special interests in non-traditional curriculum, world music, choral music, and Balinese gamelan. He is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director for the Cambridge Youth Gamelan, a Balinese gamelan open to students in Grades 2 – 12 in Cambridge, MA.
