As we all get ready to spring our clocks forward on Sunday, March 12, 2023, the Lebanon Fire Department would like to remind you to be certain to have at least one working smoke and carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home. The National Fire Protection Association further recommends having a smoke and carbon monoxide detector in each bedroom and in a common area on each floor of your home.

In addition to having these safety devices, it is critically important that they have fresh batteries. Most smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are powered by a 9-volt battery, including those that are hardwired into your home's electrical system. This ensures that the devices will work in the event of a power outage. Some newer detectors have a sealed battery compartment with a battery that will last 10 years.The State of New Hampshire has seen a high number of fire or carbon monoxide-related deaths in past years. In many of these instances, the homes were found to have no working smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors.
